Who’s looking for a closet refresh? Count us in! With a new year upon us, the slate is clean, and the doors are wide open to having your most fashionable year yet. But hey, maybe you’re throwing open up those closet doors only to feel deflated and uninspired by what greets you. Maybe you’re just plain bored of seeing the same pieces hanging there lifelessly. Perhaps those shoes that once put a little pep in your step are just not delivering these days. No worries. Sometimes all you really need to get that fashion spark back in your life is a closet refresh. It’s time to get your fashion groove back for 2018! Here are our 4 best tips for refreshing your wardrobe, so you can have stepped into 2018 in true style.
Decide what you actually wear
First things first, it’s time to take stock of what you already have hanging in your wardrobe. One of the biggest mistakes people make when refreshing their closet is they go on a shopping spree in hopes that it will give their style a renewed sense of fashion edge. And, while we’re all for a good shopping spree, rarely does this ever solve the problem, so instead of just adding to the clutter, we suggest taking stock of what you already have in your closet, and what you actually wear. And no, those jeans you love that are just a little too snug don’t count.
Get everything out of your closet so you can see it all in one space. Remove items from drawers, dig deep into the back of the closet, then start examining each item one by one. The point here is to start removing the excess. The more you’re able to be critical and stay away from emotion, the more likely it is that you’ll truly rid yourself of the clutter in your wardrobe. Ask yourself the question, “have I worn this in the last 2 months?” Unless we’re talking about a very specific outfit, like a formal dress, if you haven’t worn it in the past two months, it’s probably not something that needs to be taking up space in your wardrobe.
If you’re not ready to fully commit to getting rid of an item, store it another closet in your house, or store it under the bed in a box. If you don’t go into that second closet/box, then you’ll know for certain that piece can be donated. Trust us, while it might be hard at first, a fresh wardrobe of items you truly love is sometimes all the inspiration you need to get that fashion edge back into your life.
Make a list
Now that you’ve started to clear out your closet, and you’re getting closer to really understanding which items you wear, you’ll likely find it’s much easier to take stock of what is missing in your wardrobe. Are you in serious need of a new pair of jeans? Would a good pair of black stilettos do you good? It’s time to sit down and start making a list of what is missing in your wardrobe. This will ensure that when you do end up going shopping next, you know exactly what you need, instead of just acting on what you want. This way you’ll be less inclined to make random, spontaneous purchases, and you’ll be more inclined to make the purchases that will truly add value to your wardrobe, instead of just adding clutter. The more clutter free you’re able to keep your wardrobe, the more you’ll be able to draw inspiration from it. Give it a try. Trust us, it works.
While it’s, of course, important to make use of the clothing items that you already have, there also comes a point in a piece of clothing’s lifetime where replacement might be necessary. Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for making the most out of the wardrobe you already have, but just as important, you need to be open to the idea of replacing items when they need it. Because sure, you may love those pair of brown boots that you wear constantly, but just because you enjoy wearing them doesn’t mean you necessarily should be. Take stock of not only what’s missing in your wardrobe, but also be open to replacing certain items. Just be careful: once a new item comes in, an old item you should go out so that if you replace those well-loved boots, it’s time to say goodbye to the old pair. In with the new, and out with the old!
Pick the right trends
Let’s be real, though. As much as you want to be practical with your wardrobe, we all know that each season there are going to be specific trends and styles that you gravitate to. We’re well of that, and we encourage you to fully embrace your trendy sense of style. Having said that, we highly recommend trying your best to invest in the trends that you see having longevity. Also, ensure you’re picking trends that you really love, and not just ones you kinda, sorta like. If you really love a trend, chances are you’ll wear it regardless of whether it’s currently in style or not. For example, red is currently a big color trend we’re seeing. If you’re someone who really loves red, this is a great trend for you to invest in, because even when the color loses some of its popularity, chances are you won’t lose your love for wearing it. See what we mean?
So who’s ready to clean out their closet? It might seem like a daunting task right now, but we promise, once you actually start working on it and going through all your pieces, you’ll see why a consistent closet refresh each year is always a good idea.
Looking like your most fashionable sense all year ‘round is just the bonus.
