Let’s start with the most obvious and quintessential Memorial Day plans out there: a backyard barbeque! Hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, fresh corn on the cob, really, how can you resist? While planning a barbeque yourself might feel overwhelming, we always recommend keeping it simple. Ask your guests to bring a dish, pick up some easy to grill meat, and whip up a fresh salad, and voila, the meal is covered. Throw on some tunes in the backyard, buy some sparklers for later in the evening, and with good company, you’re all set for a backyard barbeque.

2. A Romantic Weekend Trip For Two

Looking for something a little more toned down for your Memorial Day? While a big backyard bash is always fun, if you’ve done it time and time again, perhaps this year you’re looking for something a little easier and less hassle-free. We totally understand, which is why we always recommend a quick weekend getaway whenever possible. You don’t have to travel far. Even just outside of town works. That change of scenery, some good company, and some peace and quiet might be all you really need to enjoy a relaxing weekend for two.

3. Family Beach Trip

But hey, maybe you’re not able to escape just the two of you. Perhaps you have some kiddos in tow. No problem. You can still escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life by heading out to a family cottage or beach house. There’s nothing more soothing than the relaxing sounds of the lake, and just the thought of building some sandcastles on the beach can keep the kids entertained for hours. Never feel the pressure to do anything too elaborate. Book that mini trip you’ve been planning for months, and just watch as that weight lifts off your shoulders.

4. Get Outside!

Let’s be real for a sec, though: as nice as escaping might sound, it’s not always possible for all of us, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! You can still have just as good of a Memorial Day weekend, and one of the best ways to do that is to get outside and explore (weather permitting, of course). Some ideas can include: strolling around the park, setting up a picnic, heading to the zoo, hitting up a local pool, taking the family out for ice cream, going for a bike ride, or simply just having a couple drinks on your backyard patio. Get as much of the sunshine vitamin as you can, and your good mood will be infectious for Memorial Day! We guarantee it.

5) Be Patriotic

And of course, we can’t forget to keep in mind why we actually celebrate Memorial Day, so this year, take the time to be patriotic. If you have kids in the family, perhaps create some sort of patriotic craft with them. Or, if your baking skills are up to par, trying whipping up a patriotic red, white, and blue dessert. And, most importantly, take the time to reflect on those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. There truly is nothing more important when it comes to really celebrating what Memorial Day stands for.

And there you have it! Some ideas and inspiration to get you thinking about your Memorial Day weekend.

Just remember, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, be clear with yourself about what you actually want for your long weekend. What kind of Memorial Day do you envision for yourself, or your family? Do you want to go all out and host a big party, or does the idea of just quietly spending time with the fam sound more enticing? Decide what works for you, and then stick to it. Trust us, when you actually spend your time doing the things you enjoy, rather than the things you feel pressure to enjoy, that’s when the day tends to be a hit.

Pick the Memorial Day plans that speak most directly you, and we have a suspicion your weekend will be exactly what you were hoping for and more. Happy Memorial Day to you all!
